Mark 15.1–20 + Isaiah 53.1–4

Throughout his gospel, Mark shows his readers that Jesus is not the Promised King the Jewish people were expecting. He will not be a triumphant king who comes to beat the Romans. He will not be the one who gets the Promised Land for Israel once again. Mark shows us that Jesus is the Promised King who suffers.

On Good Friday, we celebrate and remember the death of Jesus. We remember Jesus’ death because he took the punishment we deserved for our sins. Jesus’ death brought us peace with God, undoing the brokenness caused by our sin.

He is risen! In the gospel of Mark, the angel tells the good news to the women who have come to care for Jesus in his death. And the good news of Jesus’ resurrection continues to be told. On Easter Sunday, we celebrate this good news—that Jesus suffered and died on a cross and rose again on the third day. He did this so that his people could have new life.

In the Apostle’s Creed, we find old words the church has spoken for many years to tell the story of the gospel. Right in the middle of the Creed, we say words about Easter. Over this unit, we will learn about how these words tell the Easter story in the gospel of Mark. We will also be looking at how the God’s Old Words spoken by the prophets are fulfilled in Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection.

This Easter bundle contains a unit outline and three lessons looking at how Mark presents Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection as good news for our world. Each lesson contains material for four age groups extending from early childhood to the upper primary years and may also be suitable for lower high school.
