Genesis 1.1–2.1

In the beginning, there is nothing except God. But then God speaks and the heavens and the earth are created. God’s powerful word creates everything in and around our world from nothing.

Genesis 2.4–17; 3.1–24

God creates Adam and Eve and places them in a garden. Right in the middle of the garden is a tree called the tree of life. God allows Adam and Eve to eat from this tree. But when they disobey God, they can no longer eat the fruit from the tree of life.

Genesis 22.1–19

When Abraham is very old, he receives the son God promised him long before. One day, God tells Abraham to sacrifice his son. Abraham obeys God and gets everything ready, but God sends a ram for Abraham to sacrifice instead of his son.

Exodus 11.1–12.30

Moses has told Pharaoh many times to let God’s people go free. But Pharaoh does not obey. God has also sent many terrible disasters on Egypt. But Pharaoh does not obey. So, God sends one final, terrible disaster. God tells the Israelites to sacrifice a lamb so the angel of the Lord will not strike down the eldest sons of the Israelite families.

God’s law in God’s Old Words, the Old Testament, shows Israel how to live as God’s people. One part of the law shows Israel how to celebrate the amazing things God has done for his people. The rests, the gifts and the festivals helped the Israelites to remember all the good things God did for them and to practise living like God’s people should.

God promised to give Abraham a land that his people could live in. This promise begins to come true when Joshua sends spies to check out the land of Canaan (for the second time).
