LIVING WORDS C Christmas LESSON 1 My soul glorifies the Lord

Luke 1.46–55

As Luke tells the stories about the birth of Jesus, God’s Promised King, he weaves in three songs to celebrate this amazing event. Mary sings the first song in response to the news that she will give birth to the Son of God.

Luke 1.67–79

Zechariah’s song is the second of three poems Luke includes in his accounts of Jesus’ birth. Zechariah sings in response to the birth of his son, John. Zechariah sings about how God will save his people by the coming Promised King and how John will prepare people to receive him.

Luke 2.29–32

Simeon has been waiting for God’s Promised King to come. When Joseph and Mary bring Jesus to the temple, Simeon knows that this baby is what he’s been waiting for. Simeon sings a short song of praise to God, the Great King, for bringing his Promised King into our world.

At the beginning of his gospel, Luke weaves three songs of celebration into the stories around Jesus’ birth. Through these songs we learn about what Jesus’ birth means for God’s people and for all the people in our world. The lessons in this unit teach us about who Jesus is and how God’s people responded to his coming.

This Christmas bundle contains a unit outline and three lessons looking at how Luke presents Jesus’ coming as the good news for our world. Each lesson contains material for four age groups extending from early childhood to the upper primary years and may also be suitable for lower high school.
