LIVING WORDS B Term 2 LESSON 1 Blessed is the one

Psalm 1

Psalm 1 gives us a picture of two ways of living and shows us what the book of Psalms is all about. The way of faithfulness is when a person obeys God's law and enjoys the fruitful abundance of God's blessing. This is the way God made us to live. The other way to live, the way of unfaithfulness, can only end in ruin.

The brokenness and sin in our world may make us scared about the future. But when we read Psalm 46, we are reminded that we do not need to be scared because God, the Great King, is powerful over every part of our world.

Proverbs shows us how to be wise in many parts of our lives. The first thing that learners of wisdom are taught to do is to carefully listen to things that will make them wise.

Learning about friends is also part of being wise. In the book of Proverbs, we learn about how to be a good friend and how to choose good friends.

Isaiah is God's messenger to the people of Judah. Isaiah has the job of telling the people of Judah about a big problem they have and what God, the Great King, will do about it.

Although Israel has been unfaithful, God, the Great King, will not give up on them. God promises that even though everything is dark, it will not be dark forever. God is bringing a day of promise and hope in the form of a child. But this child is a divine King who will make everything right.

Joel 1.1–4; 2.1–14

An invasion of locusts has destroyed the crops of God’s people. Joel tells God’s people about how God is coming in judgement against his people. God will bring an army and they will attack God’s people just like the locusts did. The only thing for God’s people to do is return to faithfully following the Great King.

Joel 2.18–32

After God’s people turn away from their unfaithfulness, God promises to send so much blessing that everything will be overflowing. Even more than this, God promises to pour out his Spirit on all of his people.

The Poems in God’s Old Words, the Old Testament, teach us about how to faithfully live in God’s world. There are many different types of writing the Biblical poetry including songs, prayers, poems and sayings and they teach us how to make faithful choices that honour God and care for others. The Poems also include God’s words to Israel that were spoken through his messengers, the prophets. The Poems help God’s people to be faithful to the Great King. This term, we will be learning about how to live as God’s people in God’s world. This unit explores Psalms, Proverbs, Isaiah and Joel.

This unit contains one term outline plus ten lessons for Lower Primary, Middle Primary and Upper Primary. The sample lesson pictured is Lesson 6 for Middle Primary.
